🔥 Breaking News: United Nations Common Policy Framework on #OpenSource Released! A Major Step Toward Global Digital Transformation!
🌙✨ Just as the vibrant Singapore skyline lights up the city after dark, that intense night spent with the United Nations #DigitalTechnologyNetwork board to approve our #CommonPolicyFramework is more meaningful than any before it…
I am thrilled to Announce a Major Milestone indeed: After months of relentless effort, countless late nights, and unparalleled collaboration, the #CommonPolicyFramework on #OpenSource is approved!
📌 On behalf of International Telecommunication Union, I had the honor of leading this initiative, coordinating and co-authoring the definition of this groundbreaking framework. This milestone exemplifies ITU’s dedication to leveraging open source as a catalyst for scalable, sustainable, inclusive and united development.
The #CommonPolicyFramework delivers 19 core policy statements, structured around 5 pillars and 35 guidelines in a 4-stage engagement model to guide UN organizations on their open source journey. It champions Open by Default, Secure by Design, Reusability, Community Contribution, and Inclusive Participation, while fostering Documentation and RISE principles (Recognize, Incentivize, Support, Empower) to Sustain and Scale digital impact. This framework paves the open source way across the UN system, something never achieved before at this scale, bringing unprecedented alignment!
👏 Of course, this achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of all organizations involved. A special acknowledgment goes to ☮️ Vipul Siddharth at UNICEF, whose insights, commitment and co-authorship were instrumental.
🙏 I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the #OpenSourceUnited community of practice and its co-chairs, in particular Omar Mohsine for his vision, and our dedicated leads:
- Mostafa Elkordy, MBA (Strategy) (United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
- Rina Ahmed (International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA))
- Massimiliano Falcinelli (UNICC)
- Michael Downey (UNDP)
- Samuel Mbuthia (World Health Organization)
- Catharina Maracke (World Health Organization)
A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed, to inspiring and supporting initiatives such as the CERN OSPO, the European Commission OSPO, Zentrum Digitale Souveränität (ZenDiS), the German Sovereign Tech Fund, Software Heritage, and the European Union funded Open Source Ecosystem Enabler ( #OSEE) project.
Sharing some highlights from the timely and impactful Digital Public Goods Alliance #AMM2024 meeting as it concludes, along with a few memorable moments from our community gatherings. 📸✨
Stay tuned! More to come on January 1st 2025…
